OTTAWA -- Suddenly the Philadelphia Flyers look like a contender. Chandler Hutchison Jersey . The Flyers won their second straight game with a 5-0 victory over the Ottawa Senators on Tuesday. This is a sharp contrast to Philadelphias start to the season, when it scored more than two goals in a game only once, winning just four times in its first 15 games. Jakub Voracek scored twice and Steve Mason made 24 saves as the Flyers won consecutive games for just the second time this season. "We got back to the basics," said Matt Read, who had the Flyers first goal Tuesday. "The first month we tried to do things when we didnt have them and now were just keeping things simple by getting pucks deep and getting pucks out when we have to and winning puck battles along the boards. "Those little things turn into victories." Vincent Lecavalier and Brayden Schenn also scored for the Flyers (6-10-1), while Claude Giroux added two assists. It was Masons first shutout of the season and the 20th of his career. "This was an extremely sound effort all around and from a defensive standpoint we didnt give a lot up," Mason said. Craig Anderson stopped 26 of 31 shots in his first start in over a week after suffering a neck injury in a loss to Dallas on Nov. 9. The Senators (7-7-4) were shutout for the first time this season and had a three-game winning streak snapped in the loss. Robin Lehner started and won all three games in Andersons absence and was named the NHLs first star of the week last week. When Senators coach Paul MacLean was questioned as to whether he was disappointed with his teams effort, he responded by saying he thinks the whole city is disappointed. "We had been playing well and we got exposed by a team that was a little more desperate than we were," said MacLean, who faced some criticism for starting Anderson rather than the hot hand in Lehner. "There are only 20 guys from Philadelphia that are happy with their game. I dont think theres anyone on our team that should be happy with their game and Craig is no different than the rest of us. There were 20 guys that went out there and 20 guys that didnt get the job done." The Flyers led 3-0 after the second intermission and got goals from Lecavalier and Schenn to put the finishing touches on an embarrassing night for Ottawa. There was very little flow through most of the first period, further evidence that both clubs are enduring early-season struggles. "I dont think we had much jump and it started early. We werent handling pucks and we kept it along the walls a lot which kind of slows things down and makes it tough to create momentum," said Senators forward Zack Smith. "There were a couple of giveaways in the defensive end that cost us, but you lose 5-0 and you cant say the effort was there." The Flyers opened the scoring late in the first period when Read collected a puck behind the Senators net and scored on a wraparound. His attempt actually hit the far goalpost but then found the back of Andersons leg and was redirected across the goal-line. That 1-0 lead was quickly doubled in the second period as Voracek scored his first of the game 28 seconds into the period. Voracek was behind the goal when he took a pass from Scott Hartnell and quickly reached around, beating Anderson to the post for his second goal of the season. A touch more than 10 minutes later, Voracek gave the Flyers a 3-0 lead as he collected a rebound and put a shot over an outstretched Anderson with 30 seconds still remaining in an interference penalty to Senators defenceman Mark Borowiecki. The Flyers nearly took a 4-0 lead on some nifty passing between Voracek, Hartnell and Giroux, but Anderson made a diving save with the handle of his stick as time expired in the period. Notes - Senators forward Erik Condra missed his fifth straight game Tuesday night with a muscle strain in his right leg. Forward Steve Downie played his second game of the season with the Flyers and first after missing four straight with a concussion. Claude Giroux collected his 300th NHL point, all with the Flyers, with his first of two second-period assists Tuesday. Farmar averaged 10.1 points, 4.9 assists and 2.5 rebounds in 41 games for the struggling Lakers last season. The free agent guard won NBA titles in 2009 and 2010 with the Lakers, who drafted him out of UCLA in 2006. The deal allows the 27-year-old Los Angeles native to stay home and become the backup to Chris Paul after UCLA allum Darren Collison chose to leave and sign with Sacramento. Bobby Portis Jersey. . Farmar was bothered by a torn left hamstring and a strained right groin that cost him half of last season. Hawes averaged 13.2 points, 8.3 rebounds and 3.0 assists in 80 games with Cleveland and Philadelphia last season. The 26-year-old big man has also played for Sacramento during his seven-year career. ROME -- Italy is resting captain and No. Joe Colborne Jersey . 8 Sergio Parisse for its penultimate Six Nations match against Ireland at Lansdowne Road. Parisse has a calf injury and coach Jacques Brunel has decided to save him for next weeks tournament closer at home against England. Prop Martin Castrogiovanni, tied with Parisse as Italys most capped player, will hold the record by himself when he makes his 105th appearance on Saturday. Robert Barbieri moves from the openside flank to take Parisses place at No. 8, and lock Marco Bortolami will captain the side for the 39th time in Dublin. "With five players unavailable we had to adapt ourselves," Brunel said on Thursday. "Among the halfbacks we wanted to give a chance to those who had played less like (Luciano) Orquera, also because against Scotland we didnt manage the pressure well in our half. I wanted to integrate (Tito) Tebaldi into the group before the tournament but he had a slight injury and we couldnt select him. "The choices made are not in relation to next Saturdays game in Rome against England but based on consistency that we want to have. The next match is against Ireland and we have prepared for the match against that opponent." Bortolami has been promoted from the bench, along with Paul Derbyshire and Luciano Orquera. Alessandro Zanni is also injured and he will be replaced as blindside flanker by Joshua Furno, who moves from the second row. Bortolami comes in for Furno, while Derbyshire takes up Barbieris position in the No. 7 jersey. At flyhalf, Orquera bumps out Tommaso Allan, while Tebaldi replaces Edoardo Gori for his appearance in almost two years. Italy has lost all three of its matches. "Ireland is certainly a better squad than last year," Brunel said. "But we have to remember that we beat them barely a year ago in Rome and in a rather convincing fashion. We have the chance to do so again." ------ Italy: Luke McLean, Angelo Esposito, Michele Campagnaro, Gonzalo Garcia, Leonardo Sarto, Luciano Orquera, Tito Tebaldi; Robert Barbieri, Paul Derbyshire, Joshua Furno, Marco Bortolami (captain), Quintin Geldenhuys, Martin Castrogiovani, Leonardo Ghiraldini, Alberto de Marchi. The ninth match-up of the Round of 32 sees Sidney Crosby finish off a pretty sequence of passes, while Kyle Turris breaks away. For all the skill and smarts Crosby possesses, this is one highlight where he simply finds himself in the right place at the right time. Looking to expose the Washington Capitals down low on a power play, the Penguins drop four of their players below the hash marks and begin to move the disc around. The tape-to-tape action starts with Evgeni Malkin, who finds Chris Kunitz. Kunitz taps it towards the goal line for James Neal, drawing the attention of all four Capitals defenders. Unfortunately, they forgot about Sid. Neaal goes cross-crease and nearly through the legs of John Carlson to find Sid wide open for the one-knee, one-time finish. Rob Ramage Jersey. Turris, though, gets to the POY showdown by going it alone. He, too, victimizes the Caps but his moves move one way: straight to the net. After spending most of the exhibition season with Cleveland on a minor league contract, Harang signed with the Braves on March 24 after a series of injuries to the teams pitchers. Making his Braves debut, Harang matched Matt Garzas no-hit bid into the seventh inning Wednesday, when Chris Johnson homered with two outs and sent the Braves to a 1-0 victory. "Its a huge pickup for us," Johnson said. "We were struggling with having guys go down, and were going to struggle getting guys healthy and to have a performance like that. its just what we needed." After season-ending injuries to Kris Medlen and Brandon Beachy, the Braves signed Harang and Ervin Santana. Given how good Garza was in his Brewers debut, Harang had little margin for error. "I looked up there after six and saw zeroes all the way across on both sides," Harang said. "I was just able to come out and keep them off balance and keep their team guessing. Then you see their guy throwing up numbers like that, and youre trying to do the same thing and give your team a chance to win. I was able to do that." Harang (1-0) didnt allow a hit until Logan Schafer grounded a single leading off the bottom of the seventh. He gave up two hits in 6 2-3 innings, struck out three and walked one, throwing 63 of 97 pitches for strikes. "After the first hit, the emotions just run out of you for a minute, but knowing that youve got a 1-0 lead youve got to stay in there and regain your focus and keep executing pitches," Harang said. "The bullpen was able to get me out of that jam and slam the door." Relievers Luis Avilan, David Carpenter and Craig KKimbrel held the Brewers hitless. Jimmy Graham Packers Jersey. Kimbrel got three outs for his second save, completing a two-hitter. "Any time you get a 1-0 win, all kudos goes to the pitching staff," Johnson said. "He was fun to play behind. He was throwing strikes on both sides of the plate." Harang retired his first seven batters before walking Lyle Overbay, then retired 10 in a row before Schafers single. This marked the first time both starting pitchers in a big league game had not allowed a hit through six innings since June 13, 2010, when Ted Lilly of the Cubs and Gavin Floyd of the White Sox accomplished the feat, according to STATS. Alfonso Soriano doubled with two outs in the bottom of the seventh and scored on Chad Tracys single, and Lilly didnt allow a hit until pinch-hitter Juan Pierres leadoff single in the ninth. The Cubs won 1-0. Garza (0-1) made his first start for Milwaukee after signing a $50 million, four-year contract as a free agent. He allowed one run and two hits in eight innings, struck out seven and walked none, throwing 65 of 90 pitches for strikes. "Its one mistake and thats it. Its the big leagues," Garza said. "Youve got to pay for things like that, especially with the heater to the four-hole hitter." NOTES: The Braves have scored five of their six runs via four homers ... Garza hit a dribbler in front of the plate in the sixth that Harang fielded cleanly and threw to first for the out. SAN FRANCISCO -- Brandon Barnes isnt a classic power hitter. Michael Raffl Jersey . In fact, neither of the Colorado right fielders two home runs this season even left the park. They did help the Rockies to victories, however, and for that Barnes isnt making any apologies. Barnes hit a two-run, inside-the-park home run in the ninth inning and Colorado rallied for the second straight day to stun the San Francisco Giants 5-4 on Saturday. "Id really like to hit one out so I can jog around the bases to make it easier," said Barnes, who hit his first inside-the-park home run against Arizona on June 5. "I always seem to make it hard on myself. I hit the ball and Im going to run hard until something stops me." Charlie Blackmon singled with two outs off Giants closer Sergio Romo (3-3) before Barnes lined a hit to centre field. San Franciscos Angel Pagan misplayed the ball and it skipped to the fence as Blackmon and Barnes raced around the bases. Barnes, who had a walkoff triple to beat the Dodgers on June 7, had flown out to centre in three consecutive at-bats before helping Colorado extend its winning streak to four games. "My father made the trip up from Anaheim for Fathers day tomorrow and my step-mom and sister were here," Barnes said. "Its special to play in front of them, especially like a day like today." Its the second consecutive blown save and fourth this season for Romo, who gave up five runs in the ninth inning of Fridays 7-4 loss to Colorado. "I dont feel like I could have done much more there," Romo said. "I had two outs, one pitch away again ... and they found a way to stay alive. They got me again. What can I do?" Buster Poseys sacrifice fly in the seventh inning had given the Giants a 4-3 lead. Posey also doubled and homered to finish with a season-high three RBIs -- the most by San Franciscos two-time All-Star in more than 11 months. Hunter Pence hit his ninth home run of the year while Gregor Blanco had three hits for San Francisco. It wasnt enough to prevent the Giants fifth loss in six games. Barnes is the fourth opposing player to hit an inside-the-park home run at AT&T Park. Rex Brothers (3-4) pitched one inning for the win and became the 76th pitcher in history to strike out the side on nine pitches. LaTroy Hawkins worked the ninth for his 13th save, although he had to wait to celebrate. Angel Pagan appeared to ground into a game-ending double play and several Rockies players came out of the dugout to celebrate. San Francisco manager Bruce Bochy, who successfully overturned a call earlier in the game, again challenged the ruling. After a brief review, the umpires upheld the original call. "There was talk about the games here and how crazy they are," Colorado manager Walt Weiss said. "It usually comes down to millimeters and milliseconds. Barnes has a tendency to be in the middle of things. Hes been a real clutch player for us." The Giants went into the game with the best record in the majors but were staggering on the heels of four losses in five games. They trailed late in this one, too, before Posey tied it with a two-run homer in the fifth then drove in Pagan with the go-ahead run in the seventh. San Franciscos bullpen couldnt make it hold up. Jean Machi pitched out of a two-on, two-out jam in the eighth before Romo took over in the ninth. The Rockies scored twice off Giants starter Ryan Vogelsong in the second then took a 3-1 lead in the third following back-to-back doubles from Morneau and Josh Rutledge. It could have been worse for Vogelsong, who needed instant replay to get out of a two-out jam in first after Rutledge appeared to leg out an infield single and load the bases. Bochy successfully challenged the call and Rutledge was ruled out to end the inning. Poseys two-run homer off Christian Bergman in the fifth tied it. Bergman lasted six innings in his second major league start. The Rockies rookie allowed eight hits, struck out three and didnt walk a batter. Pence homered off Bergman in the first. NOTES: Colorado shortstop Troy Tulowitzki was not in the starting lineup after injuring a toe running to first base on an infield single during the ninth inning of Fridays 7-4 win. Tulowitzki pinch-hit in the ninth and flew out to centre. ... The Rockies also rested C Wilin Rosario after he fouled a ball that ricocheted off the ground and hit him in the face. ... Giants reliever Santiago Casilla (hamstring) could be activated from the disabled list, depending on the outcome of his latest rehab appearance on Saturday. ... LHP Madison Bumgarner (8-4), who pitches the series finale for San Francisco, has a 1.24 ERA over his previous four starts. RHP Juan Nicasio (5-5) takes the mound for Colorado. ... SEATTLE -- Snubbed from a World Cup camp invite by Nigeria, Obafemi Martins was determined not to sulk about missing out on a trip to Brazil. Bruce Smith Jersey . Martins said earlier this week his World Cup is the next two months playing for the Seattle Sounders. And it started with his finest goal since joining Major League Soccer. "I just want to score goals," Martins said. "Thats what I did and Im glad." Martins scored in the eighth minute to give the Sounders a 1-0 win over the San Jose Earthquakes on Saturday night as both teams began a possible two-month stretch with some of the top players in the league off competing at the World Cup. Martins goal will be in the discussion for best of the season as the year progresses. His goal came from a shallow angle just 4 yards off the end line. Instead of settling Gonzalo Pinedas pass, Martins chipped the one-hopper with his left foot over San Jose goalkeeper Jon Busch and just inside the far post. It was the fifth goal of the season for Martins. Instead of the usual backflip that has accompanied his previous goals, Martins simply shook his head possibly a little surprised his difficult attempt found the net. "Its an athletic ability. You cant teach that. Its something that somebody has," Seattle coach Sigi Schmid said. "Its definitely as good a goal thats been scored here." Busch said shots from that shallow an angle usually end up coming at the near post or end up on top of the net. "So now he finds the back post. Tip your hat to him. Nothing you can do," Busch said. "Doesnt matter who you are or where you play, thats a good goal." The Sounders (8-3-1), who remained the MLS points leader, opened the whole stadium for the first time this year and drew 49,746, the largest crowd for any MLS game this season. Seattle was without three U.S. World Cup hopefuls, while the Earthquakes were minus two. Clint Dempsey, Brad Evans and DeAndre Yedlin were gone for Seattle and San Jose (2-4-4) played without Chris Wondolowski and Clarence Goodson. Also gone for the Earthquakes was Honduran hopeful Victor Bernardez. The Sounders could have been without Martins as well, but he was not selected to join Nigeria for its World Cup camp. Teaming with Dempsey at the top of Seattles attack, Martins has a resume this season that would have been worthy of a call. Instead hes being asked to be the offensive catalyst for Seattle with Dempsey gone. Seattle controlled the match and likely should have scored two or three more times if not for stellar goalkeeping by Busch. He stopped attempts from Lamar Neagle twice in a seven-minute span of the second half and turned away Osvaldo Alonsos attempt in the 84th minute. "My job is to make saves and keep us in the game. I did my job," Busch said. All the shots being peppered toward Busch made for a quiet night at the other end for Seattles Stefan Frei. With Wondolowski and Bernardez gone, the Earthquakes were missing seven of the 11 goals they have scored this season. The only player in San Joses starting lineup with a goal was midfielder Cordell Cato. San Joses only official shot on goal came on a free kick in the 90th minute from Khari Stephenson that Frei smothered. It was the second shutout of the season for Seattle and important after giving up five goals last Sunday to New England. "The commitment of the team this week after last week was playing to zero," Schmid said. Micah Hyde Jersey . HEROES Alex Ovechkin – Scored a pair of goals in Washington’s 4-0 win over Pittsburgh. The Canadiens Get: LW Thomas Vanek and a conditional fifth-round pick.It was nothing but blowouts in Week 4 action, so to keep your spot in the TSN.ca Heisman Watch, you better have put up some big numbers Saturday. While the schedule gets a lot tougher (and a lot better for fans) from here on out, for now the contenders for college sports most prestigious individual award had to prove they can show no mercy and dominate lesser competition. Call it the “pad your stats” portion of the season. The fight for the Heisman Watch lead is tight between last years winner Johnny Manziel and the consensus top NFL prospect at quarterback Teddy Bridgewater. While neither put up astronomical stats against their heavy underdog opponents of Week 4, they showed enough to remain 1-2 in the Watch. Manziels passing stats in Texas A&Ms win over SMU were far from eye catching, 14-21 for 244 yards and one touchdown to one interception, but he added 102 yards and two touchdowns on the ground. Bridgewater meanwhile, threw for just over 200 yards but had four touchdowns in Louisvilles rout of Florida International. Both QBs were granted early exits in the blowout wins. It was another less than jaw dropping performance by Clemson senior Tajh Boys as his Week 1 statement game win over Georgia slips further from our memory. Boyd opened up ACC conference play with a 244-yard, three touchdown performance in the Tigers win over NC State.Had Oregon QB Marcus Mariota not had a bye week, Boyd could have slipped for the third consecutive week. As it were however, Mariota was off and remains fourth in the Heisman Watch. Making the big jump in the Watch this week was Baylor tailback Lache Seastrunk. After starting the year outside of the Top 25, the currently 19th-ranked Bears have looked more and more explosive each week, and Seastrunk is a big reason why. In the Bears big win over Louisiana-Monroe in Week 3, Seastrunk tallied 156 yards and a touchdown on just 10 carries. He jumped Georgia running back Todd Gurley as the top non-QB on the list. Falling out of the top five was UCLA QB Brett Hundley. Considerring his opponent, New Mexico State, Hundleys 280 yards and three touchdowns to two interceptions wasnt up to snuff to stay in the Top 5 of the Watch. Doug Flutie Jersey. Alabamas AJ McCarron followed the trend of (somewhat) disappointing QB performances in the No. 1 ranked Crimson Tides win over Colorado State. McCarron had 258 yards and just one touchdown to one interception. And as Fresno State joined the Top 25 rankings for the first time this season, so to does their QB Derek Carr join the outer ranks of the Heisman Watch. Carr led the Bulldogs to an important win over Boise State with 460 yards through the air and four touchdowns in one of the few close games of the week. Montreal played uninspired hockey for the better part of three periods in their 2-1 shootout loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning on Tuesday night. The Canadiens (9-8-2) had taken only 13 shots after two periods, many of which werent terribly difficult for Lightning goaltender Ben Bishop to deal with. Bishop made 28 saves on the night for Tampa Bay (13-5-0). "We caught ourselves chasing, we werent supporting the play, we werent supporting the puck," said Gorges. "When you do that, you just end up skating all over the place. "If you dont play with that extra grit, that intensity, jumping onto loose pucks, being first on pucks, thats what happens." Captain Brian Gionta agreed: "We had nothing, we didnt create anything." The Canadiens didnt generate much offence for the first two periods, but were kept in the game by Carey Price, who made 44 saves on the night, including six in overtime. "That was a big performance by Carey Price," said head coach Michel Therrien. "Carey gave us a chance to stick in the game." It was a gut-check for Tampa Bay, which lost Steven Stamkos on Monday. The all-star forward and league-leading scorer broke his right tibia in the Lightnings 3-0 loss to the Boston Bruins. "It was obviously a tough loss whenever you lose a player like that," said Bishop after Tuesdays game. "This is a team sport and were going to move forward. The guys played great tonight. We couldve easily won this game or we couldve easily scored more goals. "Carey Price played a great game but we hung in there until the end and a big goal by Fil in the shootout." Down 1-0 going into the third, and on the back of big saves by Price, Montreal found some momentum and some of that extra grit. They blocked 15 shots and scored once on 13 shots in the third period. Briere was credited with the equalizer at 15:22 of the third when Max Paciorettys shot went off his thigh and in. "After the first two periods, Michel (Therrien) told us to go to the net a lot more," said Briere. "There were a lot of shots where there was nobody in front of the net. "On my goal, thats what I tried to do. I tried to go to the net. It was a good play by Pacioretty too to try to hit me like that." Briere was back in the Canadiens lineup for the first time since suffering a concussion on Oct. Josh Lambo Jersey. 19. The 36-year-old, who missed 10 games, played on a line with Michael Bournival and Rene Bourque. "My performance got better as the game went on," said Briere. "In the first, Ill admit, I was a little nervous, a little disorganized. In the second, I was more comfortable. In the third, we got good scoring chances. I calmed down a little bit." Ryan Malone put Tampa Bay on the scoreboard at 5:00 of the first when he deflected an Eric Brewer shot from the point. Malone, who was shoved by Canadiens defenceman Douglas Murray seconds before Brewers shot, deflected the puck while falling to the ice. The goal was his third of the season. Montreal couldnt take advantage of three power-play opportunities in the first period. They finished the game 0 for 3 with the man advantage. The Habs, who were outshot 13-5 in the second, dodged a bullet late in the period when Radko Gudas beat Price with a shot from the point. The goal was disallowed when video replay suggested Tyler Johnson had obstructed Price on the play. After Briere tied the game, Montreal took a minor penalty late in the period, and another early in overtime, but Tampa Bay couldnt beat Price on the power play. Valtteri Filppula scored the only goal in the shootout. "We didnt compete hard enough to get success for two periods," said Therrien. "To be able to score some goals, you have to compete. This is not what we did, honestly. We created some momentum in the third because we had some urgency, but Im not impressed." Tampa Bay was without leading goal-scorer Steven Stamkos, who broke his right leg after crashing into the net against the Bruins on Monday. Stamkos underwent surgery Tuesday afternoon and is expected to miss several months of play. Rookie J.T. Brown, who was recalled from Syracuse (AHL) after Stamkos injury, recorded one shot in 14:37 of ice time. Brown played five NHL games with the Lightning in 2012. Former Soviet hockey coach Viktor Tikhonov has died at the age of 84 according to reports out of Russia. Ben Simmons Jersey . Moscow Times reporter Gabrielle Tetrault-Farber tweeted the news early Monday. Tikhonov, 84, was behind the bench for the most dominant period of Russian international hockey as head coach of both the Soviet Union national team and CSKA Moscow, better known as the Red Army Club between 1977 and the mid-1990s. He led the Soviet national team, and later the Commonwealth of Independent States and Russian teams until 1994. He would stay on at CSKA until 1996. Under Tikhonov, the nation won three Olympic gold medals (Sarajevo 1984, Calgary 1988, Albertville 1992) as well as one silver (Lake Placid 1980). He led the Soviets to nine IIHF World Championships over the span of 13 years between 1978 and 1990. He also guided the USSR to victory at the 1981 Canada Cup, defeating a Canadian team loaded with talent including Wayne Gretzky, Mike Bossy and Guy Lafleur. He has been lauded with many honours both in Russia as well as on the international stage. In addition to appointment to several national Orders under the former Soviet Union, Tikhonov was named to the IIHF Hall of Fame in 1988. Tikhonov was also head of the Soviet program for its most tumultuous period. In the late 1980s – as the USSR opened itself to the Western world with the programs of Glasnost and Perestroika – the star players that had laid the foundation for its 1980s success and a burgeoning wave of new talent started to turn its eyes towards the NHL. Starting with Alexander Mogilny’s defection to the Buffalo Sabres in 1989, the core of the Russian team began pursuing careers in North America. That wave of talent included Hall of Famers Igor Larionov, Viacheslav Fetisov and Pavel Bure as well as long-time Soviet standout Sergei Makarov and all-time NHL Russian scoring leader Sergei Fedorov. Before tens of thousands hoping to see history, the Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner finished in a dead-heat for fourth with Wicked Strong. California Chromes loss extended the longest drought without a Triple Crown champion. California Chrome co-owner Steve Coburn was bitter about horses skipping the first two legs and then stealing the Belmont. Six of the last eight Belmont winners did just that. "Thats the cowards way out," he said. "Its not fair to these horses that have been in the game since day one. If you dont make enough points to get into the Kentucky Derby, you cant run in the other two races. Its all or nothing." Coburn thought the other 10 horses ganged up on California Chrome, who was second early, dropped to fourth and then fifth before dead-heating for fourth. Photos after the race showed Chrome also had a bloody gash on his right front foot, a minor injury that may have hurt his chances. Coburn voiced a similar complaint after the Preakness, saying only the 20 horses that run in the Kentucky Derby should be eligible to compete in the other two legs. He also believed that horses skipping the Preakness should not be allowed to return in the Belmont. Coburn had been in a festive mood earlier in the day, waving his cream-colored cowboy hat to fans and signing items they tossed to him in his box seat. But the mood turned ugly after the race. Three tough races in five weeks proved too demanding for California Chrome, who was sent off as the heavy 4-5 favourite. Affirmed remains the most recent Triple Crown winner in 1978. The raucous crowd of 102,199 -- the third-largest in Belmont history -- was silenced when it became obvious that California Chrome lacked his usual punch in the stretch. Jockey Victor Espinoza realized long before then that his chestnut colt wasnt up to the grueling 1 1/2-mile trip around the tracks sweeping turns. "As soon as he came out of the gate, he wasnt the same," Espinoza said. Alan Sherman, the son and assistant to trainer Art Sherman, agreed. "When Victor started to squeeze on him, he didnt respond," he said. "He was wore out, I think." Once the official result was posted, fans sat in stunned silence before heading to the exits. Penny Chenery, the 92-year-old owner of 1973 Triple Crown champion Secretariat, had been ready to welcome a new member to the exclusive club. She and others with ties to previous Triple Crown winners came to watch what they hoped would be California Chromes big day. "Im very disappointed that we didnt have a Triple Crown winner, but Im happy for the winners," she said. Tonalist, the fifth wagering choice at 9-1 odds, was a fresh and restted horse making his debut on the Triple Crown trail. Robert Covington Jersey. . He last ran and won the Peter Pan Stakes over the same Belmont dirt on May 10. Tonalist beat Commissioner, another newcomer to the Triple Crown, by a head. Those two horses finished in the same order in the Peter Pan. Tonalist ran the distance in 2:28.52 and paid $20.40, $9.60 and $7. Commissioner returned $23.20 and $13.20, while Medal Count was another length back in third and paid $13.20 to show. Samraat was sixth, followed by General a Rod, Matterhorn, Commanding Curve, Matuszak and Ride On Curlin. California Chrome broke quickly but was pressed immediately by Commissioner and General a Rod. Espinoza eased California Chrome back into third along the rail. Approaching the final turn, California Chrome was manoeuvred to the outside. He angled four-wide turning for home, just to the outside of Tonalist, who was close to the pace the entire race. Espinoza started whipping left-handed in the lane but California Chrome had no response. "I thought he was gaining ground, but he didnt have it in him, apparently," Coburn said. Tonalist joined the growing list of Triple Crown spoilers, making California Chrome the 12th horse since Affirmed to lose his Triple try in the Belmont, the longest race in the series. In 2012, Ill Have Another won the first two legs, but was scratched the day before the Belmont with a career-ending tendon injury. "The Triple Crown itself, obviously its tough," winning trainer Christophe Clement said. "If it would be easier to do it, then it would mean nothing." Tonalist was making just his fifth career start. "We actually thought he finished second, but we got lucky, he won," Clement said. "It was great." California Chromes rise from a humble pedigree and his working-stiff owners resonated with sports fans who rarely take an interest in horse racing. His owners spent $8,000 on a mare they bred to a stallion for $2,500, and were called "dumb asses" by a trainer for buying a mare who gave no indication that she could produce a standout offspring who could run fast. Conditions seemed aligned for the Triple Crown drought to end. California Chrome thrived during his three-week stay at Belmont Park. His chestnut coat gleamed and he gained weight after the Preakness on May 17. His owners, trainer and jockey oozed confidence. But this fairy tale didnt have a happy ending. Espinoza lost his second chance at a Triple Crown. He was aboard War Emblem in 2002, when that colt stumbled at the start of the Belmont and lost all chance. "The horse tried, thats all I can ask for. He took me on the ride of my life, Ill always have that in my heart for that horse," trainer Art Sherman said. Coburn, who with Perry Martin formed Dumb Ass Partners to race their one-horse stable, had vowed that California Chrome "would go down in history." It just wasnt the kind they wanted to make. MILWAUKEE -- The NBAs board of governors unanimously approved the sale Thursday of the Milwaukee Bucks to New York investment firm executives Wesley Edens and Marc Lasry, bringing the forlorn franchise one step closer to starting a new era. Ryan Miller Jersey . Former U.S. senator Herb Kohl reached agreement with them last month for a price tag of about $550 million after they pledged to keep the team in Milwaukee. The NBA said Thursday in a statement that the transaction is expected to close shortly. The leagues expected approval comes days before the NBA holds its draft lottery. The Bucks, who had a league-worst 15 wins, have the best odds to get the No. 1 pick next week for Junes talent-rich draft. "The Bucks and their fans will benefit greatly from their vast business experience, energy and strong commitment to Milwaukee," commissioner Adam Silver said in a statement. Lasry and Edens committed to providing $100 million to help build a new arena. Kohl also announced he would donate $100 million for a new facility to replace the BMO Harris Bradley Center, the teams downtown home, which opened in 1988. Edens had said he hoped to get a plan completed for a new arena in a year, and have it built in a couple of years. He thought it might take about $400 million to build a new facility, though the new owners might face a tricky task in seeking public funding if they dont get more private help. Kohl bought the Bucks for $18 million in 1985. The Milwaukee native, whose family owned a chain of department stores, was hailed as a hometown hero. Silver praised Kohl for his "unprecedented and historic financial gift toward the construction of a new Milwaukee arena and for his outstanding service to the league and his community over his nearly 30-year tenure." An injury-plagued season left the Bucks a franchise-worst 15-67. They have finished above .500 only three times since 2000, though Milwaukee did make the playoffs in 2012-13. The Bucks were swept in four games by Miami in the first round. With new owners and a 25 per cent chance to pick up the No. 1 pick in the draft, the Bucks face a defining off-season. Even if it doesnt win the lottery, Milwaukee cannot fall below the fourth pick in a draft stocked with top prospects, including Dukes Jabari Parker and Kansas Andrew Wiggins. Jason Kasdorf Jersey . He says he will have the operation Wednesday and be ready in time for training camp in September. Bernier missed five games in March due to the injury. Buffalo Sabres Gear . Top-seeded Djokovic swept to a 6-1, 6-3 win over 51st-ranked Roberto Bautista Agut of Spain in just 57 minutes, but fourth-seeded Federer had to see off a serious challenge from 48th-ranked Radek Stepanek of the Czech Republic before coming through 6-2, 6-7 (4), 6-3.NEW YORK -- Marlon Byrd was having a difficult night at the plate, along with just about everyone else. Still, when he came up in the 11th inning against his former teammates, he had an idea what he wanted to do. When the Mets switched their approach, he adjusted and came through. Byrd reached low and away to slice an RBI double just inside the right field line in the 11th, leading the Philadelphia Phillies over New York 3-2 Friday night in a game of many squandered opportunities. "Hes got a great mentality for that. Hes always on the positive side and hes always up there," Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg said. "Hell grind it out. Hell grind out a game and thats what he demonstrates." Chase Utley had three hits and scored all the Phillies runs, two on singles by Domonic Brown, to help Philadelphia end a four-game skid and beat the Mets for the first time in six meetings. Carlos Torres (2-2), the seventh Mets pitcher, gave up a one-out double to Utley and intentionally walked Ryan Howard. Byrd, who played for the Mets last season, was able to go with the pitch for the opposite-field hit. "Had some tough at-bats early," Byrd said after striking out three times and walking twice before getting his big hit. "The good thing is I know the guys over there, know what theyre trying to do. They changed it up on me a little bit with Carlos. It was just one of those things." The Phillies left the bases loaded in the inning, only fitting as the teams combined to strand 32 runners on a damp night in a game that took 4 hours, 39 minutes. Jonathan Papelbon earned his 10th save. Mario Hollands (1-1) got his first big league win. The Mets returned home after a 2-6 road trip that ended with a three-game sweep at the hands of the Marlins and a 23-inning scoreless streak. They quickly ended the drought on Curtis Grandersons RBI double in the first but then reverted to their struggling ways until the eighth, when David Wright doubled in the tying run off Antonio Bastardo. New York loaded the bases in each of the first two innings against Roberto Hernandez. The Mets also put two runners on in three other innings, including the fifth when they had second and third with no outs after shortsstop Jimmy Rollins throwing error on a potential double-play ball. Justin Falk Jersey. Still, they mostly came up empty. New York left 15 on base, a season high, and went 1 for 11 with runners in scoring position. "You need a groundball up the middle, you need a flyball, you need to put the ball in play someplace to add on runs, to score the big runs, and everybody works at it every day," Mets manager Terry Collins said. While the Mets wasted opportunity after opportunity, the Phillies were hardly better in their first game since Toronto swept four from them in a home-and-home interleague series. Philadelphia stranded 17 at Citi Field and couldnt capitalize on 11 walks -- three intentional. Brown and Utley teamed in the third and fifth against Jenrry Mejia to give the Phillies a 2-1 lead. Utley led off the third with a double and advanced to third on Howards fly to left. After a walk to Byrd, Brown fisted a soft liner the opposite way to left to tie it 1-all. Brown drove in Utley in the fifth with another hit dunked into left field. Mejia gave up two runs and six hits in 4 2-3 innings. He walked three, hit a batter with a pitch and struck out four. Hernandez laboured through five innings, giving up a run while stranding 10. "Hernandez battled from a second and third no outs, which was big at the time," Sandberg said. Mets fans got excited in the third when Mejias weak fly to left looked as though it had a chance of dropping. Instead, a charging Brown made the catch to leave New York pitchers 0 for 59 this season.
